Dear Pluto

Dear Pluto,

Please accept my deepest condolences on being demoted to a non-planeteray object status after 76 years of loyal service to the solar system. I, for one, will miss you dearly.

My mind cannot wrap around the fact that my solar system now has only 8 planets. All the paper mache models that I made and all the diagrams I drew in school, now stand invalid. But, I've always thought that you were the cutest to draw or model or paint. Something about you, dear Pluto was happy and childlike.

So what that you have a "funky" orbit or that you lie among larger sized universal debris? I still think your planethood should not be taken away to whimsical 'galactic grumblings'. Well, you have my support and I will always consider you the 9th planet.

Give my regards to Charon!

Galactically yours,
-Amrita Rajagopal

@Rajesh - Same here.

@Cool - Maybe we should.

8 planets are easier to remember than 9 but what's the difference between a dwarf planet and a real one? funny write-up though.

@Mosilager - Oh comon! You cant remember Pluto...tsk tsk! :P
I agree...how the hell do you differentiate between a dwarf and a real planet. It's like an elitist
planetary club now...*sigh*

hey i can but it's one less thing for the 'aglee peedhi' the next generation. according to our parents we couldn't remember jack compared to them so prolly the next gen will be even worse than us.

Wait, you're apologizing to Pluto? It should be the other way around. I'm super pissed at Pluto for lying to us for all these years. I spent too many hours on those papier-mache models to now find out that 1/9 of it was a lie. Pluto, until you can get your act together...you're on notice.

@CK - No way dude! IAU called Pluto a planet in 1930 and now they changed their mind. So IAU is on notice...not Pluto! :P

CK said...

But IAU only did it, because Pluto told them it was a planet! And it tricked them about it for 70 years!

In that case put the blame on Clyde Tombaugh. Pluto is innocent.

You are not alone. Over 300 professional astronomers led by Dr. Alan Stern, Principal Investiagor of NASA's New Horizons unmanned mission to Pluto signed a petition rejecting the IAU decision. That decision was made by 424 out of 10,000 IAU members, or four percent, most of whom are not even planetary scientists.

You can find a lay petition asking the IAU to reinstate Pluto here:

http://pleasesavepluto.org/pluto/petition-to-iau/

For many reasons, including the linguistic nonsense that a "dwarf planet" is not a planet at all, this definition is unlikely to stand. There is a good chance it will be overturned at the next IAU convention in 2009 or when New Horizons reaches Pluto in 2015.

Many astronomers recommend adding a third category of planets, the ice dwarfs, which would include Pluto and Eris. Yes, these are different from the other planets, but they are still planets nonetheless.
